Workaround 2: Install an older version and then upgrade to 12.04 Once you boot into your new Lubuntu/Xubuntu, you can then switch to the default Unity desktop by installing the ubuntu-desktop package.Install either Lubuntu 12.04 32-bit or Xubuntu 12.04 32-bit both of these use a non-PAE kernel by default. There is a heated bug report about this Canonical has decided that the default Ubuntu Desktop install will expect PAE support.Ī few suggested workarounds: Workaround 1: Install Lubuntu or Xubuntu, then install the regular Ubuntu Desktop While the above is strictly true, old systems which have the memory controller on the motherboard may not "expose" the CPU's PAE support, effectively making them non-PAE. Or more advanced versions of the same architecture, such as the AMDĪthlon and later AMD processor models. It is also available on other processors with similar Later Pentium-series processors (except the 400 MHz-bus versions of
PAE is provided by Intel Pentium Pro and above CPUs, including all I am just not sure what is the proper way of sharing it as I do not want to violate any rules of the Zorin Forum. The error message means that your CPU does not support PAE extensions - that is a technique which allows a 32bit CPU to address more than 4GB of memory address space.īy default, 12.04 and later versions of Ubuntu expects a CPU with this capability: Last resort: I am willing to share my non-pae Zorin OS 6 32-bit ISO. The only comment I have is that Remastersys will not work in a virtual machine as it will produce errors if you plan on following the steps I took in making a non-pae ISO. I also read in your post about using a Virtual machine. Insert another flash drive 16 GB or larger and see if you can install it here, then continue with the steps I took.
On your computer with Windows XP/Fedora, boot up with a Zorin OS 6 live either by DVD or flash. Second suggestion (not sure if this would work). Perhaps if you are able to install it on your computer with Windows XP/Fedora, you can use the something else selection and install Zorin OS 6 if you have enough space on your hard drive, then continue with the steps I took. I burned the Zorin OS 6 32-bit on a DVD and installed it on my pae supported computer. In making my non-pae ISO, I had to actually install it physically on a hard drive.
On your second computer that has Windows XP and Fedora, does it have pae support? Use the cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep pae command as suggested by Madvinegar to find out. Here is a screenshot: notice my CPU and the kernel being usedįrom reading your post, I am getting the impression you want to use Zorin OS 6 32-bit on your Toshibia laptop that does not have pae support. I'll report back and let you know what happens.
The live DVD took several minutes to boot but the desktop finally showed up!!!Īt this time, I have not selected the install option. See if this newly created live DVD will work on my computer that does not have pae capabilities. Doubled checked the MD5sum of the iso and it was a match. It will create an ISO file and MD5sum file in the /home/remastersys/remastersys folder.
While researching, I read that Remastersys must have ubiquity and ubiquity-frontend-gtk therefore, I used software center and installed it. Opened Software Center and it said Remastersys was installed but for terminal use only. I searched for it in the GUI menu but could not find it. Open terminal and type: apt-get remove linux-image-generic-paeģ. Did a reboot and booted with the generic kernel to make sure everything was working properly.ī) Delete pae kernel. Need to replace the current kernel with a generic (non-pae).Ī) Open terminal and type: apt-get-install linux-image-generic. I installed Zorin OS 6 32-bit on one of my computers that has a CPU that can handle PAE.Ģ. After searching the Internet and reading about the Ubuntu 12.04 installation process and system requirements, non-PAE processors, and Remastersys I was able to make a bootable live DVD of Zorin OS 6 32-bit.ġ. The Zorin 6 32-bit ISO that I downloaded from the Zorin-OS website will not boot because my computer's CPU does not have PAE.
